There are inestimable interpretations of the chair since the beginning of time. It seems a simple proposition to provide a comfortable resting place for the human body in a fairly upright position. It has however the potential to encourage some of the worst and the best of human design endeavours. Getting it right is a challenge, and we salute the designers who have done so. Here are a few of our favourites…
B&B Italia ‘Mart’ Armchair by Antonio Citterio available from Space Furniture The perfect opener for this category, the Mart Armchair is beautiful. One of the great classic chairs – sculptural in form, elegant and ergonomic. In the context below, we used this contemporary chair in a traditional setting where it is perfectly at home.
Discipline ‘Pocket’ Armchair available from Stylecraft Definitely a Hare + Klein favourite. We love the combination of natural materials – timber and hand-stitched leather – and the way that the soft leather moulds to the shape of the body. It is raw and relaxed, yet sophisticated at the same time. An upcoming contemporary classic.
Gervasoni ‘Gray 23 Chair’ available from Anibou For us, the appeal of this chair is in its simplicity. It has an honesty about it which is refreshing, whilst also being surprisingly comfortable.
B&B Italia ‘Grande Papilio’ Armchair by Naoto Fukasawa available from Space Furniture Another exquisite armchair by B&B Italia. This stunning chair is sculptural in form and surprisingly comfortable. There is also an outdoor version available in wicker.
Carl Hansen & Son ‘CH20 Elbow Chair’ by Hans J. Wegner available from Cult Like its most famous cousin the Wishbone Chair, this Hans J. Wegner classic is timeless, simple and light in design. Simply put, it is beautiful.
