Last week Hare + Klein was part of the inaugural launch of Design for Mirabel, a philanthropic endeavour created by Melbourne Designer Diane Bergeron. We caught up with her briefly to hear more about this worthwhile cause and her involvement in bringing it to life. How did you get involved with Design for Mirabel? I’ve always felt that the design industry is one that can afford to give back to the community and I’d spent some time looking for an organisation to throw my support behind. Things were set in motion after Ryan Trainor, a fellow partner for Mercer, put me in contact with Jane Rowe of the Mirabel Foundation. I’d wanted to support a charity that is home related and as Mirabel works to make better homes for children it is perfect. Where did the idea for Design for Mirabel come from? The idea for the initial fundraising event is based on Design on a Dime, an annual benefit in New York. I’d never seen it done here in Australia and I thought it would be a good way to kick start our fundraising efforts to build a new house and headquarters for the Mirabel Foundation. How has the industry supported it? It’s been amazing to see the industry get involved with Design for Mirabel. There are of course our ten designers, such as Meryl, who’ve come on board offering their time and skill putting together their rooms, suppliers have generously donated goods, we’ve had publicity from others in the industry and of course we’ll have members of the industry attending our benefit this week. Will you be doing it again? Yes we will be doing it again but in a different format. This year has been an amazing experience having ten designers create vignettes to raise funds but next year design for Mirabel will evolve into an annual gala and an online platform. Which media have supported it? Australian House and Garden have been a huge support coming on board as our official media partner. Mary McDonald had a guest spot on The Morning Show on Channel 7 with Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur and The Age have also given us some publicity. And of course lovely bloggers like yourself have come on board and spread the word about our cause. How do you fit this in with running a successful design practice? It’s energising and very rewarding to give back to the community for such a worthy cause. Although our day-to-day schedule is always very full, working to raise fund for The Mirabel Foundation is so fulfilling that we make it work. It also helps that the design community has rallied to support us for Design for Mirabel.
